Evaluating Faulty Items

Item 1 :

The distractors in this example are not suitable and do not works well for this question. Many will go straight to distractor A if they do not aware of the SVA rule, whereby -s is needed to be added to the verb 'play' since Sally is singular. Distractor C is not suitable since it is not a tense. Possible answers would be either B or D.

Item 2 :

The instruction did not specified on what types of lexical knowledge is tested. Therefore, it would be rather confusing for learners to answer it correctly.

Item 3 :

This example should be testing on spelling. But it is quite unreliable since they can be more than 1 answer to the jumbled words. For instance, the TAC could also be form to CAT or ACT. It would be difficult to the raters to give marks since there is more than 1 answer.

Item 4 :

First impression to this question 'Man that is a very long instruction!' It would be very difficult for learners to figure out the meaning from the context. It will be more to guessing the answers.

Item 5 :

This questions are all jumbled up. The first one is asking about school system, while the third one suddenly asking about Einstein's theory. Then the second and fourth questions are something that has got to do with yourself, in a nutshell, all mixed up. Students might find it very difficult to answer them, i.e those from art stream do not have much information regarding Einstein's theory. The questions should be given in a range where students are able to answer them regardless in any streams they are.

Item 6 :

This is supposed to be testing on their reading comprehension. But learners are only required to write the answers in numbers instead of transferring the information in sentences. They therefore could easily take a guess to answer it.

Item 7 :

This test do testing the listening ability, but the problem is, learners can get the answers easily since the passage given and what they will listen are exactly the same. Therefore they do not have to listen to find the answers because they are actually listening to the answers given freely.

Item 8 :

This should be testing on speaking but instead the learners are actually do not get to exercise their speaking skills. All they do is only to repeat after the teacher and yes I agree with Athirah, it is more 'parroting' rather than speaking.
